Be Happy in Success and Failure, Says Former Script Writer Okenyi Mary Chinwe

Okenyi Mary ChinweTo succeed in any field, one must possess certain qualities that will make him or her unique and outstanding in that field. For a masseur to excel in her profession first of all she must love her profession; have a good appearance and a manner of approach.

These includes smiling face, neatness, a dignified and friendly disposition, a soothing and refined manner of speech to make her clients relaxed and amiable.

She must have sufficient knowledge about massage and the techniques. She must be a healthy and happy person to be able to impact joy into her clients and relieve them from their pains because, one cannot give what she doesn’t have or teach what she doesn’t know. She must have a desire to succeed, be determined and committed to her work. She can’t achieve these if she doesn’t have a good view of success.

Many people talk about success and everyone wants success but not all become successful. For one to reach her destination, she must know the name of the place and how to reach there. It is easier to say success than to explain the word success. Success means to me an attainment of one’s goals or to achieve one’s desire.

Though, the meaning of success is very simple to me but acquiring success makes me sweat more than a Christmas goat. I have written many novels, poems and scripts that my editors read, approved and encouraged me to go on and publish them which I did in good spirit. But the money requested to publish one of the novels was more than I could pay. I come from a simple home and despite the help rendered to me by them, it was still not enough to get my books published.

So I decided to sell my script to raise money for the publishing. I met people who promised to find a buyer for me. I was happy and hopeful. I thought of my dreams coming true, but at the end, I was disappointed because none could find me a buyer.

Though, I was sad and could have fallen into depression but I picked up a book and read a quote from David Frost in which he says ‘don’t aim for success if you want it; just do what you love and believe in and it will come naturally. And Pastor Ighodalo- success does not come to you, you go to it, and another quotation that says ‘In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure and fall nine times but rise the tenth. These quotations revived my spirit and I determined to keep trying and do not give up till I achieve my goals.

Whatever happens to us happens for a reason. I learnt that if we succeed in everything we do. There will be no room to learn new things and so we fail not as failures but to make adjustments and achieve greater goals.

Knowledge is power. During life’s disappointments, I acquired knowledge that equipped me for a great future. I learned the importance of patience and perseverance.

We do not need to focus on success to be happy, rather we should do what we love and believe in and in doing this we should give our best. As hard as it may be, we can be happy without being successful because success is not what one achieves in a day. We will encounter failures but if we remain happy despite our failures, our happiness will attract success to us, but sadness when unsuccessful may lead to depression and lack of will to try again and that is when we really fail. We do great things when we are happy.

We cannot be successful at what we do without being happy except if we achieved success in a dishonest way. But if we really worked hard and honestly to become successful, I do not see the reason we cannot be happy.
