Because massage therapy certification and licensing requirements may vary significantly from one State to another, we have put together a comprehensive list of requirements for each State.  Please click your State on the map below to read about all the requirements that apply to you so that you can quickly get started with whatever it is that you want to do.

Massage Therapy Schools

Schools are available everywhere these days with certification programs that are offered in the day or night. No matter what your situation is, you can make massage schooling easily fit your schedule.

Not only will you learn basic massage techniques, you will also learn about the human anatomy and physiology, pathology, hydrotherapy, hygiene and first aid to name just a few. Schooling incorporates both text book as well as hands-on learning to prepare you for a successful career.

Upon completion of the curriculum, massage schools provide you with a Diploma in Basic Massage Therapy, which is what most States require for practicing as a licensed massage therapist. This credential is also called a degree or a certificate by some schools.

There are also schools that teach basic business planning, management, laws and regulations if you’re interested in starting your own business in the massage industry. We provide this information in other sections of this website.

Role of a Massage Therapist

Massage therapists help individuals relieve pain caused by day to day stress build-up, body tightening, injury or illness.

Many people these days have incorporated regular massages in their lifestyle routines to proactively mitigate physical problems, maintain good posture and just feel better.

A massage therapist’s role is very important and extremely meaningful, which is why the demand for this service has continuously increased over time. It has become one of the most popular careers sought after by many today.

Most practicing therapists are employed by hospitals, clinics, sports facilities and smaller private companies that are everywhere. In addition, many massage therapists work independently as either business contractors or in private homes. No matter where you live, there will always be demand for your services and thus several options near you that offer these jobs.

Massage Therapy Certification Requirements

Similar to many other professions, many states have certification requirements that you must meet before you can be called a “massage therapist”. If your state doesn’t have this requirement, you don’t need to apply for a license prior to practicing massage.

However, if your state does have this requirement, you must meet the licensing requirements before you can practice as a massage therapist. Training programs are normally 500-1000 hours in length, and offer a certificate, diploma or a degree upon completion.

Massage Therapist Jobs

Because of the high demand for qualified massage therapists, you are almost guaranteed a job after completing school.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the future for the massage therapy profession is very bright. More states are establishing regulations for therapists as insurance companies across the board are contemplating coverage of massage therapy.

To mirror this trend, private companies such as massage franchises are expanding by creating more job opportunities for massage therapists to accommodate the growing demand.

So whether it’s through a medical facility, a sports facility, a private franchise or on your own, your likelihood of a successful career as a massage therapist is excellent.
