So the state of Maryland has set requirements and guidelines that you must meet before you will be granted a massage therapy license.

And also, you will be required to take a certain amount of schooling, take national exams, a local exam, and need to apply to the state.

Schooling Details and Requirements (Credit Hours)

As well as, a massage therapy applicant, you must arrange to take the required amount of schooling and graduate from an approved program.

So once you have graduated.

So you must have the school mail a certified sealed copy of your official transcripts directly to the Board.

Because these transcripts must show that you successfully completed the required minimum of 500 hours in an approved and accredited massage therapy program for either a Licensed Massage Therapist or a Registered Massage Practitioner.

In addition to the 500-hour curriculum requirement, the Licensed Massage Therapist must also take another 60 college level credits.

Licensing/Certification Requirements

And also, there are two different types of Massage Therapist titles in Maryland.

And also, you may choose to become an LMT, which stands for a Licensed Massage Therapist, or an RMP that stands for a Registered Massage Practitioner.

To become certified as either an LMT or an RMP you must meet the 500 hours of education at an approved massage therapy school regulated by the Maryland State Massage Therapy Advisory Committee.

And also, if you choose to take the Licensed Massage Therapist route.

So then you must also attend and obtain 60 hours of college-level courses.

Because this additional 60 hours of college-level courses allow the Licensed Massage Therapist the chance to practice within medical settings such as nursing homes or doctors’ offices.

And also, a registered Massage Practitioner may only practice in a private business or health club.

Both the LMT and RMP must pass one of the following national exams:

In addition to these national exams, you will also be required to take the Maryland Jurisprudence Examination.

This exam is given under the direction of Maryland’s Board of Chiropractic Examiners.

You must score a minimum of 75% here.

You will also need to fill out the Jurisprudence Application and submit the exam fee of $100 to the Board.

Once you have completed the above-mentioned exams and schooling.

And also, you will be required to complete the Application for Licensure or Registration in Massage Therapy form and submit it directly to the Board with the $150 application fee.

Massage Application

In addition to your application, you must also submit the following documents:

  • Include a 2×2” passport size photo with a Notary Seal placed over the edge of the photo.
  • A photocopy of your massage school transcript.
  • And also, your transcript should be sent directly to the Board from the issuing school or program.
  • A photocopy of any higher education transcripts that meet the 60-hour college credit requirement.
  • Because this too must be sent directly to the Board from the issuing entity.
  • A copy of your Score Report from the national examination that you took.
  • So a copy of your current CPR/First Aid certification.
  • $150 application fee and the $100 Jurisprudence Examination fee.
  • Because this must be made out as a check or money order made payable to the MD Board of Chiropractic & Massage Therapy Examiners.

The Maryland State Board of Chiropractic & Massage Therapy Examiners is the governing “Board” that oversees and is the licensing author for Massage Therapists and Massage Practitioners in the state of Maryland.

And also, the Board is set to regulate the practice of massage therapy in the state, administer licensing examinations, enforce statutes and regulations and carry out the laws as they apply to the massage industry.

Requirements to Start A Massage Business in Maryland (Massage Establishment License)

Starting your massage business in Maryland takes a lot of initiative and hard work.

The state provides you with a checklist to help you get started on your journey towards opening your massage business.

Massage License Renewal Process

So your massage license will need to be renewed biennially on every even-numbered calendar year.

The expiration for your license will always be October 31st of the even-numbered calendar year.

The Board will notify you of your renewal by an Email Blast that will be sent out a few months prior to October.

And also, if you do not renew before October 31st 

So you will be charged a late penalty of $200 in addition to the renewal fee.

To renew, you will need to do so online, unless if you are planning to reinstate a non-renewed license or if you are planning to reactivate from an inactive status.

To access the renewal online system you will need to visit the Board’s website at www.mdmassage.org and click on the “renewal functioning links” located on the homepage.

From there, you will log in and begin the renewal process.

Once you have applied for renewal, you will need to pay an “Active” renewal fee of $278 for a Licensed Massage Therapist or $250 for a Registered Massage Practitioner.

In addition to renewing your massage license.

And also, you will be required to take and complete the 24-hour continuing education requirement over the course of 2 years.

A total of 3 of the 24 hours must be taken in Professional Ethics or Jurisprudence, another 3 hours in Communicable Diseases and 18 in Massage Therapy related coursework approved by the Board.

Massage License Reciprocity

And also, if you attended a foreign school, either outside of the state of Maryland or outside of the United States.

And also, you will need to request that the school or program mail your transcripts and the core curriculum that you studied directly to the Board.

The state also requires that you submit verification of current or previous licenses or certifications held in other states or jurisdictions.
