Schooling Details and Requirements (Credit Hours)

So the state of Louisiana requires that you obtain at least 500 hours of massage therapy education prior to applying for your massage therapy license.

These 500 hours will include the following topics:

  • 325 hours dedicated to studying massage therapy techniques and clinical,
  • 125 hours studying anatomy and physiology,
  • 50 hours of related massage therapy coursework
  • Business and Ethics
  • CPR/First Aid certification

In addition to the 500-hour curriculum requirement.

So you must also receive a passing score on the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork or the Massage & Bodywork Licensing Examination.

Licensing/Certification Requirements

In order to become a licensed massage therapist in the state of Louisiana.

And also, you will need to fully complete the application and the application process.

In addition to your application you will also be asked to submit the following documentation:

  • Complete and submit a Louisiana Licensure Application for Board consideration.
  • And also, the application must be submitted with a signed and notarized Affidavit of Application.
  • Submit a $75 application fee.
  • However, this fee must be paid by either check or money order made payable to “LBMT”.
  • And also, a criminal background check.
  • So you must submit official education transcripts.
  • Because this includes high school level education as well as massage therapy program transcripts.
  • All transcripts must be sent from the school directly to the Board.
  • So proof and scores of taking and successfully passing one of the national exams.
  • And also, a current 2×2” passport size photo of yourself on photo paper.

Requirements to Start A Massage Business in Louisiana (Massage Establishment License)

And also, starting your massage business in Louisiana takes a lot of initiative and hard work.

The state requires you to take several actions.

Which include some of the following factors:

  • Choosing the right business structure
  • Writing your business plan
  • Creating and registering your business
  • Naming your business
  • Obtaining tax information and an ID number
  • Checking zoning requirements
  • Obtaining a business license

This license is required if there are more than one licensed massage therapists practising in one location.

The cost of applying for an Establishment License is $100 every year and it must be renewed each year on March 31st.

Massage License Renewal Process

The renewal period is every year from January 1st to March 31st.

Any renewal applications sent prior to January 1st or after March 31st will not be accepted for renewal.

As of January 1st, 2013, the Board will not be mailing out renewal notices, instead, you will be receiving an email reminder.

To renew your license you must do so by filling out the renewal application found here.

Because this physical application may be mailed directly to the Board.

To accompany your application, a $125 renewal fee will be required.

If your renewal application is late (after March 31st).

And also, a late fee of $100 will be added to your total fee amount.

So the state of Louisiana requires that you complete a total of 12 continuing education hours during the year.

So if you take more than 12 hours.

Because these hours may not be applied to the next year (no rollover continuing education credits allowed).

If you have a license from a state or jurisdiction other than Louisiana.

So then you may be eligible for reciprocity.

Check with the Board directly about the limits and requirements for applying by endorsement.

  1. I have an Associate degree in CIS, which I also took a lot of business administration classes along with that. I am interested in taking an online course’s until the hands on portion is necessary. I am interested in owning my own business so I would want to be the Certified Massage Therapist. Also is training available for facials?
