Massage Therapy Schools in Delaware

The state of Delaware is a unique one when it comes to the massage profession and licensing process.  There are two different ways you can become certified as a therapist for practicing here.

The first pathway is what is referred to as the Certified Massage Technicians (CMT), which only requires 300 hours of approved massage education hours.  The other pathway is called the Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT), which requires you to obtain at least 500 hours of training at an approved massage therapy school, along with passing required examinations.

Delaware is truly a unique and interesting state to aspire being a trained massage professional.  With only 1,057 register practitioners, the competition is slim to none, leaving you with unlimited potential for growth and success.

Schooling Details and Requirements (Credit Hours)

Depending on which career path you choose to take, the amount of schooling will vary.  The following is a brief description of the required in-class and training hours you must receive prior to becoming certified in either massage certification program.

Education Requirements for the Certified Massage Technician (CMT)

To be considered for a certification as a Certified Massage Technician, you must complete 300-hours of course training.

The required 300-hours of massage therapy training must include supervised in-class studies as it applies to the profession.  The 300-hour course study must be a “unified introductory training program in massage and bodywork”.  These courses must be taken at one school or an approved program.

Education Requirements for the Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT)

In order for you to be considered for licensure as a Licensed Massage Therapist, you must first complete 500 hours of supervised in-class study at an approved school or program.

Coursework will include hands-on technique and contraindications as they relate to the massage and bodywork profession.  You can attend more than one school or approved program in order to accumulate all of the required 500 hours.  These 500 hours are broken down into the following:

  • 100 hours of anatomy and physiology
  • 300 hours of technique and theory of massage or bodywork therapy
  • 75 hours of elective course in the field of massage therapy
  • 25 hours of ethics, law and contraindications

Some of the areas of massage and bodywork education may include the following:
