Requirements to Become a Massage Therapy School Teacher in Oregon

The state of Oregon has clear and simple requirements to become a massage instructor at an Oregon massage school.

Oregon requires three years experience in the massage field and a massage license within the state of Oregon.

Educational Requirements for Massage Instructors

While a specific instructor license is not required to teach massage therapy, a massage license is required for all massage therapy instructors in Oregon.  The state requires 625 hours of education, broken down into the following hours:

  • 200 hours of Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology and Kinesiology
  • 300 hours Massage related curriculum including theory & practical application
  • 125 hours electives

While these requirements are less specific than most licensing states, which require a greater breakdown in the required hours and are more specific about requirements, the state of Oregon also publishes model curriculum to help guide therapists and schools to better achieve their educational goals.

Additionally, electronic fingerprinting and a background check is required to obtain a license to practice, and therefore, to teach massage.

Recommended Experience

The state of Oregon requires all massage therapy teachers at massage schools to have a minimum of 3 years professional experience before teaching.  This is slightly more than most states which require only 2 years experience.

Continuing Education Requirements for Teachers

Oregon requires all massage therapists to complete continuing education in order to maintain a license to practice.  The requirement is a minimum of 25 hours every 2 years, with a minimum of 4 hours in professional ethics.  Of those 25 hours, at least 15 must be in person continuing education hours, while the remaining 10 may be online or electronic forms of continuing education.

Insurance Requirements

The state of Oregon requires its practitioners or teachers to carry professional liability insurance.  Liability insurance is available through a massage professional organization, such as AMTA (American Massage Therapy Association) or ABMP (Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals).  AMTA’s professional membership explicitly includes insurance for massage professionals working as classroom teachers.

Fees

A massage therapy license costs $240 for the initial license, with a $155 renewal fee every 2 years.  Additionally, liability insurance is required, which varies greatly in price base don provider, but on average costs around $200 per year.

There is no additional instructor license to teach in Oregon, but there will be a variable fee for the 25 hours of continuing education required every 2 years.
